In the last year HSPSE have taken further strides to improve the quality of its service. Some of you may have seen the Sam Puttlab when in Southport or on Tour with Phil Kenyon. The SAM Puttlab contains an attachment that clips to the putter that in return sends a signal to an adjacent receiver unit. Information is then given in the form of up to 28 different factors, which is displayed in a nice looking report. These include:
Face Alignment at set up and Impact
Swing path
Impact spot
Rise angle
Shaft angle at impact
Club head Rotation
Movement Dynamics (Speed and Timing)
As
an example into how the system can help the coach through providing
very specific and accurate information can be seen through an insight
into some of the parameters measured with Jorge Campillo. Jorge is a
member of the Spanish national team with a handicap is +3.5 and was
part of the Spanish national Squad we worked with in between
Christmas and New Year.
Through level one training we
understand the importance of ball roll and the need to develop the
correct impact factors to develop a true roll. See his ball roll caption on images 1 - 5. Click arrow on the right side of the image to change images.
Using part of the SAM Puttlab report (see picture 6 below) we can see that Jorge has a rise angle of 5.1 degrees and adds 3.9 degrees of loft on the club. Using an Odyssey Putter with 4 degrees of loft that means there is 7.9 degrees of loft at impact. So much loft at impact, and a rise angle that is a fraction too high, will produce a poor ball roll as video analysis shows below.
Further analysis with the video based coaching software reveals
the true cause of what’s happening at impact. This is important as
the Sam Puttlab is not enough information for a coach to work with.
The SAM highlights the ‘effects’, but video analysis, combined
with the coaches experience and knowledge will highlight the ‘cause’.
It is the cause that determines what you work on with the
pupil.
Looking at the video images (see pic’s 2 and 3 below) we can as well
see that in his setup, his hands are behind the ball and he adds loft
through impact. The ball position is also a fraction to far forward.
Using the blend function we could also highlight a slight movement
back in his pivot point during the stroke.
All this information together reveals the cause of those impact factors shown by the SAM Puttlab.
This level of analysis was
applied to all of the other parameters to give Jorge a comprehensive
overview of his putting mechanics and a solution for ongoing
improvement.
Level 2 Instructors will have access to the complete footage of Jorge and through the Login-Area. But not only Jorges videos and Sam Report are there, plenty more is going to be uploaded all Level 2 Instructors have access to a wide field of knowledge and data to learn and analyse themselfs.

One who teaches shall never cease to learn!
As a Golf Professional in an increasingly competitive market it is evident that those who are successful have learnt to specialise and separate themselves from the masses. The first step of becoming specialised is acquiring knowledge.
The Harold Swash Putting School of Excellence Accredited Instructor Programme is a market leading educational programme containing world class and tour proven coaching methods and information.
The programme gives the Golf Professionals overall putting specific knowledge and experience and an insight into a proven coaching philosophy and framework that has been implemented at all levels from teaching beginners to tour level coaching.
The ‘Accredited Instructor Programme’ has been established since 2006 and has been conducted across Europe, Asia and Australasia. It is authorized by the British PGA, Australian PGA and the European PGA in qualifying for CDP points.
The programme overview
The programme is delivered through a combination of theory and practically based seminars that will improve the coaches putting specific knowledge and coaching application.
Level 1 programme
• 2 day programme
• Intro to Harold Swash Coaching Philosophy
• Practical and Theory modules
• Custom Fitting Programme
• Accredited Upon Completion
The goal of the ‘Level 1 Programme’ is to establish the basic fundamentals required for consistent and accurate putting. This understanding allows the basis to discuss the main principles and preferences encouraged in our day to day coaching
The programme covers technical information, putting lesson structure and analysis, and putter custom fitting procedures for short, belly and long putters.
Level 2 programme
Pre-requisite: Completed Level 1 programme required + 1 year teaching experience
• 2 day programme and provision of case studies
• Advanced Coaching and methodology
• Accredited Upon completion
• Case study completion required for continual development
• Live Lesson Assessment
With a one year gap requested before completing level two the aim of the programme is to build on the knowledge of the Level 1 programme and the experience gained post attendance.
The Level 2 programme further investigates technical issues when working with more developed players and addresses the issue of ‘Cause & Effect’.
Taking the information and knowledge gleaned from the Level 1 programme, Level 2 develops an understanding of how best to create putting solutions for the individual and suggest the correct intervention based upon the players own development and tendencies.
Level 2 is delivered through a combination of theory sessions, tour player case studies and interactive live lessons. All participants will deliver a live lesson to a guest student, offering a chance for direct feedback on lessons structure and technical knowledge.
Further Educational Modules
Pre-requisite: Completed Level 2 programme required + 1 year teaching experience
• 2 day programme
• Introduction of new themes and topics
• Case study presentation by each participant
The further educational days are for golf coaches that want to continuously add in-depth knowledge and experience to their coaching. Several topics coming from the instructors’ wish list will be discussed on the 2 day course. It is also a very good way on exchanging teaching experience for the coaches.
